Adventures at Debbies

Mission:
Port of Call
Location: Debbie's
Timeline: Mission Day 0 at 1900
Word had gone out that there was a kind of informal get together being held at Debbie's for all of the newcomers to Sojourner, and so far only a few people had responded, with Kaelira being one of them. It was a low key affair: some food and drinks, and hopefully some good chats.
Making her way into Debbie's lounge, Kaelira looked around to see that she was the first one to arrive, so she took the opportunity to get herself a drink, a fruity little number that had all the fizz without the regrettable hangover in the morning called a Warp Core Breach, and then decided to take a seat at one of the free tables. Hopefully it wouldn't be too long before someone else came, otherwise it was going to be a long night.
The soft hum of the lounge doors parting was the only warning before Dr. Theodor Wishmore stepped inside, a touch of surprise flickering across his expression at seeing just one person seated. He’d half-expected to be late — Sickbay had a way of bending time — but it looked like he was among the first to arrive.
Debbie’s Diner had that gently lived-in charm Starfleet couldn’t replicate on a blueprint: warm lights, mismatched cushions, a counter that had seen more elbows than most starships saw plasma conduits. Theo took in the room with a slow, appreciative glance before spotting Kaelira.
His posture eased.
“Ensign Tamsin,” he greeted, a quiet warmth in his tone as he approached her table. Not formal — just enough structure to show respect for a colleague he already felt at ease with. “I hope I’m not intruding on a moment of peace.”
He gestured lightly to the seat across from her. “May I?”
As he waited for her nod, he added with a soft half-smile, “I wasn’t sure how many would come tonight. But I’m glad at least one familiar face braved the unknown.”
If she accepted, he would settle into the chair, glancing briefly toward the bar.
“I haven’t visited Debbie’s yet,” he admitted. “Any recommendations? Preferably something that won’t make me regret tomorrow’s shift.”
He didn’t mention the long hours he’d already been working, or that this gathering was his first real attempt to nudge himself into the rhythm of Sojourner’s community—those were things he kept tucked behind the calm. But the openness in his voice made it clear he was genuinely glad to be here, and even more so to find Kaelira not sitting alone.
Kaelira motioned to one of the available seats and gave him a qarm smile, "Please, come take a seat. I've only been here for about ten minutes myself, including the time it took to get my drink and choose a seat."
Looking at the glass and then looking at Theo she added, "This is a Warp Core Breach, surprisingly, and it's just a couple of different types of fruit juice with some lemonade and some grenadine added to it, so definitely no regrets in the morning."
"I'm surprised you managed to make it, being a doctor and all," Kaelira understood that the concept of time was non-existent in Medical, especially being out in the field. "The invitation was extended to a few people, so we'll see who shows up."
Theo settled into the chair with a small nod, letting out a quiet breath. He glanced at her drink. “Hard to argue with something that looks that harmless. I’ve treated worse.”
He rested his hands lightly on the table. “Feels like we’ve been running since we came aboard. How are you finding things so far? Settling in?”
He looked around the diner, taking in the warm, easy atmosphere. “First room I’ve been in today that doesn’t have a bioscanner. Not a bad change.”
Kaelira shrugged, "I appreciate that we're on different shifts, otherwise you'd know it's been boots to the ground for me as well." She didn't mean it in a sarcastic kind of way, not in the slightest. "I met my room-mates the other day and they seem kind of lovely, except for one of them who I'm still having trouble understanding because I don't think she likes me, but that's a challenge for another day.
The doors again hissed softly, followed by a soft thump and an audible "Ow" as Thomas bounced off it. There was a momentary pause as he let it open all the way before stepping in and looking around. Something not everyone realized was the doors on every ship differed in their timing. Spotting the two officers sitting at a table, he waved at them cheerfully as he went up to the counter to grab a drink and a snack as he was usually hungry.
A few minutes later, Thomas walked over to the table. One hand occupied by an oversized bowl of buttered popcorn and the other holding a pitcher of sweet chilled black tea with a glass. "Evening, mind if I join?" He asked the duo.
"Absolutely, the more the merrier." Kaelira smiled at the newcomer, was that popcorn he brought over too?! It was little known that she was a sucker for some good popcorn and a movie.
"I'm Kaelira Tamsin, one of the new nurses on board, nice to meet you...?" She held out her hand for the customary shake.
Finally, time allowed for Amarok to explore his new ship, he knew most of the Nova-class decks layout from his time on the Olympia. He expected some layout differences, since the Sojourner is one of the Rhode Island subtypes. Now he is a department head, and it felt like he should tour around to show both his new crewmates and their starship respect. He entered Debbie's Diner as his last destination for now, Amarok spotted Kaelira and Thomas talking to an officer he'd not met yet.
Amarok walked over and smiled. "Hello again, Lieutenants, Ensign," his voice warm and the shades a little more transparent than usual so his all black eyes could be seen for his angle away from the lights let the shades reduce their opacity. He offered a hand to the officer he hadn't met yet. "Lieutenant Amarok tr'Ragnar, Chief Science Officer," he greeted Theodor.
Theo listened to Kaelira with a sympathetic tilt of his head. “Roommates take a bit to figure out,” he said gently. “Give it time — first impressions on a new ship are rarely the final ones.”
Thomas’s run-in with the door earned a quiet, amused breath from him. “Evening, Lieutenant. Please — sit before the ship throws anything else at you.” He nodded toward the popcorn. “Good thinking coming prepared.”
When Amarok approached, Theo rose just enough to meet the offered hand with a steady grip. “Dr. Theodor Wishmore. Assistant CMO,” he introduced, tone warm but grounded. “Good to meet you, Lieutenant. I imagine Science has been just as busy as Medical these last few days.”
He settled back slightly, letting the easy rhythm of the group form around the table. “Seems Debbie’s is the place to be for new arrivals tonight.”
"Good to meet you as well. Not particularly, no. That said, I expect our next mission to be full of discovery. Well, I hope." Amarok's tone was lite and pleasant as he shook Theodor's hand once and let go. He chuckled, "don't worry, we will be mixing with the rest of the crew soon. I'm so excited to be gaining new friends." A grin pulled at the corners of his lips, he hoped his cheerful personality counters his creepy face.
Theo returned Amarok’s handshake with an easy steadiness. “Here’s hoping discovery waits until we’ve all had at least one full night’s sleep,” he said lightly.
Amarok’s grin earned a small, genuine one in return. “New friends are a good start. And we’ll all be working alongside each other soon enough — Science and Medical always cross paths sooner or later.”
He glanced around their small gathering, a quiet note of appreciation in his expression; “Honestly? I’m just glad we all ended up in the same place tonight. Makes the ship feel a little less new.”
"So," Amarok began, "what's everyone's favourite pastime?" He eyed them each for a few moments to see who'd speak first.
Looking at the other two after Amarok had spoken, Kaelira piped up, "I know this might sound fairly simple and kind of basic, but I quite enjoy drawing and curling up with a good book and a cup of tea brewed from locally sourced ingredients." She shrugged and pulled her hair around to the side to play with it, "Other than that, it's getting to spend time in nature. How about everyone else?"
"Growing things, my workouts, being able to cook real food. There's just something in the replicated stuff that never quite tasted right to me. Though it's better than the rations we had back home for sure." Thomas stated as he sat down, holding out the almost bucket sized bowl of popcorn for general use, then pouring himself a glass of the tea.
Theo considered the question for a moment, the faintest hint of a smile forming. “Most of my free time ends up in books,” he admitted. “Old Earth novels, medical histories… anything with a quiet pace.”
He lifted a hand lightly, almost apologetically. “And I play a bit of music when I can. Piano, mostly. It’s a good way to clear my head after a long shift.”
A small, self-aware shrug. “Nothing too adventurous, I’m afraid. But it does the job.”
"A book club sounds right for this quad, and Thomas can cook for us. I have been known to read, well a lot, while I worked at Daystrom Institute. I only did it to learn, but I'm open to fiction recommendations." Amarok suggested and gave them a grin.
"Please submit a list of requested snacks and all ahead of time. I also tend to keep some basics on-hand at my workstation, so feel free to drop by and grab something." Thomas commented after a sip of his drink and a crunching as he devoured a handful of the popcorn.
"So," Kaelira started with a smile, "I think we've got enough to start a little club of our own that has a chill kind of a feel to it, right? If anyone is interested in relaxation, meditation or even some drawing slash painting, I can help out with that, and it would be good to have a buddy to do it with."
Amarok nodded, “I’d love to, an arts club, should we start activities while still at Pathfinder or wait til we depart?” He glanced between each of those present.
Theo’s smile deepened slightly at the idea of an impromptu club forming before they’d even left Pathfinder.
“Given how our first few days have gone,” he said mildly, “I suspect if we wait for the ‘right time,’ it’ll never arrive.”
He glanced toward the windows, where Pathfinder’s lights still glowed beyond the hull. “We’re all here now. That’s usually enough.”
A brief pause, thoughtful but not heavy.
“What if we keep it simple? Once a week. Same table. Whoever’s free shows up with whatever they’re working on — a book, a sketchpad, something edible.” His eyes flicked toward Thomas’s popcorn with quiet amusement.
“No structure. No pressure. Just… a consistent place to land.”
He leaned back slightly, tone easy. “We can refine it once we’ve survived our first mission.”
Amarok grinned before nodded. “As the Vulcans say, that is logical.” He chuckled.
