Transfers and Unexpected Meetings

Posted on Mon Aug 30th, 2021 @ 6:30pm by Lieutenant Commander Emni t'Nai & Lieutenant Kennedy Ryan Walsh

Mission: The Place of Skulls
Location: USS Miranda
Timeline: Mission Day 8 at 0830

Dr. Pugyit Azda stood in the transporter room of the USS Miranda with his arms crossed. The morning had felt as though he'd been through a whole day already. First Lieutenant Hoffer had reported in at 0500 believing herself in early labor. It had just been indigestion, but that had required a whole work up just to make sure everything was well. Then two engineers had found themselves blushing and embarrassed after what they deemed an '"accident" on the holodeck. It may have been an accident, but had clearly involved the removal of clothing and engagement with each other in a Biblical sense. By the time he had gotten them sorted out he had just enough time to actually get into his uniform--he hadn't bothered when he was called in for Lieutenant Hoffer--and toss back a cup of coffee.

Behind him two of the nursing team stood at the ready, medical tricorders and med kits set out to take updated readings of the two medical transfers on the spot.

Azda sighed, eyeing the officer manning the controls. "Any word from them Ensign?" he inquired gruffly.

The wide eyed ensign shook her head, clearly a little bit unsure of how to navigate the CMO's apparent prickliness.

Behind him, Azda felt as much as heard the double doors of the transporter room swish open. He didn't turn to look choosing, instead, to continue grumpily facing the transporter pad.

"Dr. Pugyit," a feminine voice said by way of greeting. "Have they signaled their readiness yet?"

Reluctantly Azda turned his head, glancing at the young female lieutenant in command cranberry. "Good morning Lieutenant Nowicka," he replied. "Not yet."

As if on cue the transporter operator piped up. "Incoming from the Sojourner. They're ready to transport. Two in medical stasis and their Acting CMO." The woman looked up from the controls. "On your command sirs?"

Azda eyed Nowicka out of the corner of his eye. Technically he outranked her, but only by one half pip. Still, she was in charge of this show. He waited, unclasping his arms and placing them around back, hands gripping each other.

"Let's get them over here," Gosia Nowicka said, nodding to the transporter operator.

Doctor Kennedy Ryan Walsh materialized onboard the USS Miranda. He held a large medical PADD in his arms with the files pertaining to both Commander Takomi and Lieutenant Giorgiou. He still couldn't believe he was now Acting Chief Medical Officer, USS Sojourner. He looked at either side of him where the stasis pods and then to Lieutenant Commander Pugyit, "Permission to come onboard?"

The Bajoran doctor looked from the Sojourner's CMO to the 2XO next to him, aware that the man who had just materialized on the transporter pad had assumed he was in charge based on his rank. But Gosia seemed to have gone an unexpected color of red, a lighter tone of the command cranberry she wore.

"Kennedy?" she asked, almost incredulously.

Azda's eyes narrowed slightly, looking between the two of them again. Clearly this was not the first time Lieutenant Nowicka had met Dr. Ryan Walsh.

Doctor Kennedy Ryan Walsh rose an eyebrow and slowly panned over to the voice, "Doctor Ryan Walsh, please, Lieutenant. And do I know, you?" Kennedy rose an eyebrow suspiciously at the command division officer who knew him on a first-name basis.

Lieutenant Nowicka's face had turned stormy at the correction, moving from recognition to irritation. "Permission to come aboard granted," she said, steel entering her tone.

Azda watched the exchange with interest, but waved his nursing staff ahead to the two stasis pods on the transporter pad. Gosia could fend for herself. He was only here for the patient transfer, after all.

"Lieutenant Nowicka," Gosia said, extending her hand to Kennedy as he descended the platform steps. "Gosia Nowicka."

"Lieutenant Nowicka," Doctor Ryan Walsh saw the woman extend wondering why she wanted the medical PADD but he was familiar with the name Gosia but not sure where to place it but offered it to her anyway.

Gosia accepted the PADD handing it off to Dr. Pugyit without bothering to look at it. "You really don't know who I am?" She asked, eyes narrowing. For a long moment she looked him over before she let out one short bark of a laugh. "Figures."

Turning to her Bajoran counterpart she sighed. "If you need him to travel to Sickbay with you can you get him back to the transporter room when you're done? I have work to do." She didn't bother to wait for an answer before turning on her heel.

Azda watched as Gosia turned to go, raising his eyebrows at Dr. Ryan Walsh. "Shall we get our patients to Sickbay? You can update me on their cases while we walk."

Doctor Ryan Walsh watched the woman laugh at his expense as he rolled his shoulders back at the uncomfortable situation he was just placed in as she left the transporter room to the Doctors, "Sorry what was that Doctor Pugyit?" He recalled, "yes, let's bring them to your Sickbay and of course I'll update you."

Azda nodded, unclasping his hands and nodding to the two nurses that were each moving the hovering stasis pods carefully from the transporter pad. He seemed to be nodding a lot. Twitching his shoulders back in an attempt to clear a muscle cramp from standing in the same position for that long, he made his way out of the transporter room and down the long corridor to the turbolift, not checking to see if Dr. Ryan Walsh was following until he reached the lift.

The turbolift doors parted and Azda entered, watching as the younger doctor followed him in. "They'll come along after," he remarked explaining why the nurses didn't join them with their patients. "So, I've read your reports, and the reports written by Dr. t'Nai. Is there anything new or any details that you think could use clarifying?"

Azda didn't really think there were likely to be more details. He knew his job and he did it thoroughly, but he wanted to be polite.

Kennedy Ryan Walsh followed Doctor Pugyit down the corridor into the turbolift in the unfamiliar starship, "There hasn't been any change since my most recent report on the Commander Takomi and, Lieutenant Giorgiou." Kennedy winced that he added more emphasis to Nir's last name. It still shook him to the core when he had to, "They're both in stable condition in stasis. There's not much else to elaborate on but I'll happily answer any of your questions, Doctor."

The Bajoran CMO nodded. "I don't expect to have any, but you should at least see them settled before you report back," he remarked. The turbolift stopped then, opening up onto a new deck for the two doctors to exit. Azda made his way ahead again not bothering to confirm that Dr. Ryan Walsh followed in his wake. After a few twists and turns they reached Sickbay, the overlarge doors parting before them to real a bustling large space.

The shorter man caught up with a half-breathe, "Who was she back there? I seem to have forgotten her name. She acted like she knew me, I don't think I've ever seen her in my life. Is she always like that with visiting doctors bringing their patients over?"

Azda made a face. "Lieutenant Nowicka?" he asked, knowing full well that was how Dr. Ryan Walsh was asking about. "She can be abrasive, but I've never seen her react quite like that," he remarked. "She did seem like she recognized you. Someone you served with perhaps? Or a classmate?" The Bajoran doctor shrugged. "Whatever it might have been you're unlikely to see her again on this visit. She's undoubtedly off to do something that makes her look and feel more like a 2XO."

The doors behind Sickbay had closed behind them, but swished back open moments later the first of the two stasis pods floating through guided by a nurse. The man moved the pod into position, hooking it up to a monitoring interface that immediately displayed live vitals for Commander Takomi.

Kennedy rose his shoulders as he still couldn't recall her, "I just wished I was better with faces and names. Perhaps, I would have remembered her or maybe it was too long ago." Kennedy rested his hand on his chin before walking up to look at the vital displays, "Do you want to trade Sickbays?"

Azda snorted, "No," he said shortly. "I'll keep my Galaxy-class bells and whistles thank you very much."

The doors to Sickbay swished open just moments later, Lieutenant Giorgoiu's stasis pod floating ahead of the second nurse before being docked into the next monitoring interface. The second screen lit with vitals, small beeps sounding as the pod relayed details to the Sickbay systems.

Azda made his way between the two pods looking between the two patients and nodding. "We'll take good care of them," he remarked. "They're in good hands here."

Kennedy felt reassured that both Commander Takomi and Lieutenant Giorgiou would be in capable medical care in the hands of Doctor Pugyit. His heart skipped a beat while he watched Lieutenant Giorgiou's stasis pod's capsule float by them. He looked down into the pod, looking down at his face. It had been a few days but he was still struggling with the trauma from that day on the planet. He took a deep breathe to ground himself, "Thank you, Doctor."

Azda nodded. He was glad to help the younger man out, but there were things he needed to get to. "Shall we then?" he asked, starting for the Sickbay doors to return his visitor to the transporter. The two men made their way down the corridor in silence, Azda happy not to need to make small talk.

It was a moment before the turbolift opened to the corridor, undoubtedly ferrying someone ahead of them before returning. So it was with some surprise to the Bajoran CMO when the doors swished open to reveal the scowling face of Lieutenant Nowicka.

"Guess you will see her again after all," he murmured just loud enough for Dr. Ryan Walsh to hear before stepping into the turbolift with a nod to the 2XO. "Lieutenant," he remarked in greeting.

Doctor Ryan Walsh anxiety heightened at the present facial expression on the Lieutenant's face. He gently nodded his head in respectable approach and repeating the same greeting as his Miranda counterpart, "Lieutenant."

"Doctor Pugyit," Gosia said in acknowledgement before turning her gaze on Kennedy, eyes narrowing. "Doctor Ryan Walsh," she said, her tone steely.

She looked back to Azda, features neutral, but distant. "I assume you are en route to the transporter room?"

Azda nodded his confirmation.

"Excellent. Deck 13," the woman said to the air setting the turbolift in motion.

Doctor Ryan Walsh stood in the back of the Turbolift. He felt uneasy being in an enclosed space with Lieutenant Nowicka. He couldn't place if the two of them had met each other before. He looked her up and down once over, still uncertain if their paths had crossed before.

Turbolift rides in a Galaxy class starship could hardly be called short, but Azda would have bet that even a ride from one end of the Miranda to the other would have taken less time than it took to arrive at deck 13. By the time the doors had swished open to dispel the officers into the corridor the temperature in the lift had dropped markedly and not one of the three of them had spoken another word.

So it was with great surprise that Azda turned to direct Dr. Ryan Walsh to the left only to find Lieutenant Nowicka striding out of the lift in that exact direction pausing only to look back over shoulder at the two men, focusing her annoyed glance on the both and saying, "Well, are you going to the transporter room or not?"

The Bajoran nodded, happy to follow along and convinced he would be even happier when he was not playing host to someone that Nowicka clearly took issue with.

The rounded the final bend in the corridor, the transporter doors parting at their arrival.

Kennedy was thrilled at the aspect of going back home to the Sojourner. He paused briefly realizing that he had just considered the Sojo, his home. He smiled before he caught glimpse of a scowlful glance from Lieutenant Nowicka which tensed him even further.

Gosia watched as Kennedy stepped onto the transporter platform, lips pressed tightly together.

"Safe travels to you Dr. Ryan Walsh," Azda said with a nod to the other doctor. As before he stood at the ready waiting for Lieutenant Nowicka to give the order.

She stared at the man on the platform for a long moment before speaking. "I'd say it was nice seeing you again, Kenny, but clearly you don't know who I am." And, before the Acting CMO on the platform could respond, she turned to the transporter technician and nodded. "Energize."

"Goooooooooooooooooooose?!" Kennedy shouted as a question, then his mouth formed a very large O-shape as his body faded on the transporter platform.

Azda's eyebrows shot up despite himself as the Sojourner's doctor dematerialized disappearing from the platform. There was a brief moment where it felt as if all of the air went out of the room before he turned to Lieutenant Nowicka, a question on his face.

"Did he just..." he began, unable to contain his curiosity, ".. call you Goose?"

Gosia shot a glare at Azda, but then her features leveled out to something more like boredom. "That's sure what it sounded like."

And then without another word, she exited the room leaving Azda with a million questions that he would never get answers to.
