Captain's Log: The Way Forward

"Captain's log," Kodak began, rattling off the current stardate. "After five days of negotiation, Muriel and I have convinced the Council to accept Starfleet's offer to move the Chameloids to a new, safer home within the Federation. The new location is classified as the Chameloids wish to maintain their secrecy but," he took a breath, "we'll be ferrying them to Starbase 2 for further transport to their new home. As I record this log, my Executive Officer is seeing to the mass beam up of the Chameloids, whom we're dividing amongst our various cargo bays for the trip to Starbase 2. We've set up enough cots and all the trappings necessary to keep them comfortable for the trip."

"Not all of the Chameloids are coming with us, however," the Captain continued. "The Path we followed was painstakingly set up so that other Lost Children -- like myself -- could find their way home. With the Chameloids now moving, the Council felt it necessary to leave a few people behind to man the lighthouse, so to speak. They will, with Starfleet's help, rotate these people in and out now and then but the goal is to ensure there is always someone there to greet any new arrivals and send them along to the new homeworld. We are leaving these people with an abundance of supplies: food, medicine, comfortable beds, tools, etc -- all that they need to live comfortably until the next personnel exchange and resupply run."

"On a personal note," Kodak said, "I am pleased that the Council has given Muriel permission to remain onboard with us for a time. She will accompany the Sojourner to Pathfinder Station, where she will disembark and travel to the new Chameloid homeworld. While she's with us, Muriel will be spending much of her time tutoring me in the ways of my people. There is, apparently, a lot I still do not know about myself and my abilities. She also wishes to teach me the history of our people and help me to understand what it truly means to be Chameloid." A grateful note entered his voice as he said, "I'm thankful to have this opportunity to learn from her. And I look forward to, perhaps, someday spending an extended period of time with my people in our new home."

"I've never had a homeworld before," the Chameloid smiled, his eyes shining in the Bridge's lights. "I have to say, knowing that I have a world -- a people -- to call home now is like nothing I have ever felt before. I am deeply indebted to Starfleet, the Federation, and my crew for making all of this possible. It's nothing I ever thought I would have...and that means everything to me."

"Computer," Kodak smiled brightly, "end log."
